Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following Deluge of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also comprised leaders in various fields.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
