France to begin intercepting small boats in Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and saying there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Now, a French maritime police spokesperson states officers will start intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this summer, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister left government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Now French officials will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
