More than two dozen Olympic champions, coaches and additional global sports figures have endorsed a letter urging a stop to the capital punishment of a champion boxer and coach, who is facing execution in Iran.

Escalating Global Anger

During increasing worldwide anger over Iran’s increasing application of capital punishment as a means of suppression, the powerfully expressed statement censures the Iranian regime's ruling to maintain the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The boxer, 30, from the city in the northeastern region, was taken into custody for being involved in national uprisings in 2019 and accused of supporting an opposition group. He has spent half a decade in incarceration, where he has been abused and held in seclusion.

“Athletics is intended to promote faith, solidarity, and fortitude,” the supporters expressed. “The death penalty of a titleholder for his beliefs is a direct assault on these ideals and a warning to every athlete who ventures to express dissent.

History of Putting to Death Athletes

The statement said that the boxer's situation was not unique and highlighted Iran’s record of sentencing to death competitors for their beliefs, such as Habib Khabiri, skipper of the football side, and a women's sports leader, leader of the female volleyball side. In 2020, Navid Afkari, a young Iranian sports titleholder, was also executed.

Other supporters to the letter consist of a sailing champion, who captained the pioneering all-female crew in a global yacht race and was the first woman to be awarded a renowned nautical honor; the ex- skipper of the soccer side a sports advocate; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the 1978 World Cup.

Arrest and Flawed Legal Process

The boxer was detained in early 2020. The accusations against him entailed “spreading corruption on Earth through fire-setting and destruction of public property”. His sentence has been overturned twice but on October 4 it was confirmed on the latest review. His legal proceedings was denounced as “grossly unfair” by rights defenders and groups.

Appeal to United Nations

The urging to halt the boxer's capital punishment follows a 2023 letter to the United Nations official for human rights, endorsed by over a hundred human rights experts and entities, calling for action to stop the athlete’s death.

Death Penalty Surge

Based on reports, there is an “execution crisis in Iran, which has attained alarming proportions”. In the year 2023, authorities sentenced at least 853 people – a 48% increase on 2022. In the prior period, statistics showed nine hundred seventy-two executions, representing the peak figure since the year 2015. More than eight hundred people have been put to death so far in 2025.

Dissidents and dissidents are focus, particularly in the wake of the the year 2022 protests. Specialists say the Iranian authorities have utilized the executions to quell protest, create apprehension among the population and tighten their grip on authority.
